Day 92: Teaching Absolute Truth to Our Children

As parents, we often seek ways to guide our children toward a life of integrity, wisdom, and purpose. One of the most important ways we can accomplish this is by instilling in them the absolute truth found in God's Word. Teaching absolute truth is not just a task to check off a list but a daily responsibility that requires intentional effort and unwavering commitment. It is a profound, lifelong calling that begins at home and is lived out through every word and action.

Biblical Principle - Absolute Truth from God’s Word

In Deuteronomy 6:4-9, God commands His people to keep His Word at the forefront of their lives, emphasizing the importance of passing down His teachings to the next generation. These verses remind us that God's truth is not just for us but is meant to be diligently taught to our children at all times and in all places:

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates." (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

The Lord instructs us to love Him fully and to keep His commandments close to our hearts. But the next step is equally significant: teaching our children these commandments. This is not limited to formal teaching moments but is meant to permeate every part of our daily lives. Whether sitting at the table, walking down the road, or getting ready for bed, every moment is an opportunity to talk about God's truths and model His ways.

Practical Application - Living Out Biblical Truth

The practical application of teaching absolute truth requires us to be intentional in our daily actions. If we are committed to passing down God's Word to our children, we must diligently teach them through words and deeds. This can sometimes feel overwhelming, but it’s essential to remember that consistency is key.

We are called to teach "diligently"—in every situation, every interaction, and moment. This doesn’t mean that every conversation must be a formal Bible study or a sermon, but it does mean that we should constantly point our children back to God's truth through our behavior, our attitudes, and the lessons we share.

One of the best ways to ensure we are not provoking our children to anger (as warned in Colossians 3:21) is to avoid neglecting this consistent teaching. Anger often arises when children feel ignored, misunderstood, or unsupported. When we fail to teach and live out God’s truth actively, we risk discouraging them and causing frustration. However, when we are deliberate in guiding them with love and care, we create an environment where they can grow in wisdom, knowing right from wrong and understanding the heart of God.

"Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged." (Colossians 3:21)

How Can We Apply This?

  • Be Consistent: Talk about God’s truth throughout the day, during everyday tasks like cooking, driving, or even household chores. Look for teachable moments.

  • Live It Out: Children often learn more from what they see than hear. Be a living example of God's truth in action.

  • Create Opportunities: Designate time to read the Bible with your children, pray together, and discuss what God's Word teaches about life and character.

  • Be Patient and Loving: When teaching, especially when they don't immediately understand or make mistakes, show grace and patience. This will help avoid provoking anger and foster a relationship built on trust and love.

Following these practices creates an atmosphere where our children can learn to live by the absolute truths of God’s Word. Our goal should be not just to teach them facts but to show them how to apply God’s truth in their lives so they can honor Him.

Conclusion

Teaching absolute truth to our children is one of our most significant responsibilities and privileges as parents. It’s a continuous task rooted in love and woven into every moment of life. As we diligently teach God's Word and model His truth, we guide our children toward a foundation of wisdom, grace, and understanding that will serve them for a lifetime.

Let’s commit to being faithful in this task, always looking for ways to teach, encourage, and model the absolute truth of God’s Word in our homes. May we raise a generation that walks in His truth and shares His love with the world?
