Day 120: Step First, Then Watch God Work
Biblical Principle: Sometimes, the Lord asks us to step out by faith first, then we watch Him do the work.
There are moments in our Christian walk when the Lord asks us to take a step before He shows us the outcome. These are the faith-testing moments, the times when we’re called to trust without seeing the full picture. And often, it’s in these steps—uncertain, uncomfortable, and even a little scary—that we witness the power of God unfold.
A Lesson from the Jordan River
In Joshua 3:7-13, the Israelites faced a significant obstacle: the Jordan River stood between them and the Promised Land. But notice what God instructed Joshua to do. The priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant were told to enter the river before it stopped. The miracle didn’t happen before the step—it happened because of the step.
“And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests... shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters... shall stand upon an heap.” – Joshua 3:13
God didn’t move the water until their feet were in it.
This moment was not just about crossing a river but about teaching God’s people to trust Him fully. It was a moment of God magnifying Joshua as a leader and showing Israel He was with them just as He had been with Moses. But it required faith in action.
Faith Is Not Blind
Too often, we think of faith as leaping into the dark. But biblical faith is not blind—it’s rooted in God's trustworthiness. The Israelites weren’t stepping into the Jordan, not knowing what was on the other side. They knew the Promised Land awaited. What they didn’t know was how they’d get there.
In the same way, when God calls us to move forward in life, He often doesn’t remove the obstacle until we take the first step. That’s not because He’s testing us for fun—it’s because He’s growing our faith, deepening our trust, and preparing us for greater things.
Living It Out: Faith in Everyday Life
Let’s bring this home. Think about the decisions you face right now—maybe a job change, a move, a ministry opportunity, or a difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding. Are you waiting for the waters to part before you move forward?
What if God is waiting for you to step in?
Hebrews 10:35-39 reminds us to hold on to our confidence and to live by faith:
“Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward... Now the just shall live by faith.”
Walking by faith doesn’t mean we move recklessly. It means we move obediently, trusting that God will meet us when we do. That’s the difference. The priests didn’t just walk into the Jordan for no reason but because God told them to.
Final Thoughts
The Christian life is filled with moments when God says, “Step in first.” He wants to show us what He can do, but we have to trust Him enough to move.
So today, don’t wait for the waters to part before you follow God’s lead. If He’s calling you, step in. The miracle may be waiting on the other side of your obedience.
Faith is stepping into the river before the water parts.
Faith is moving with confidence in God’s promises.
Faith believes He’ll do what He says—when we do what He asks.
This is your reminder today: You don’t need all the answers to take the first step. You need to trust the One who holds them.
“We are not of them who draw back… but of them that believe.” – Hebrews 10:39
