Day 112: The Bitter End of Rebellion – A Call to Walk in Truth
Biblical Principle – Absolute Truth from God’s Word
Truth: God takes very seriously the acts of a man that undermine the order and structure of God’s laws of authority in our lives. The curse here implies bitterness when we rebel against God’s laws. When we seek to gain from the destruction of others or chase after our fleshly desires, it always leads to a bitter end.
One of the sobering truths in Scripture is in Deuteronomy 27:15–26—a passage that pulls no punches regarding the consequences of rebellion. Here, the Lord clearly outlines what brings a curse upon a person: idolatry, disrespecting parents, moving property boundaries, deceiving the blind, perverting justice, and many other grave sins. The communal response follows each declaration, “And all the people shall say, Amen.” This collective affirmation shows the seriousness with which God’s people were to uphold these truths—not just individually but as a community.
God’s law was never meant to be a suggestion—it reflects His divine order. When that order is ignored or twisted, the result is always bitterness, brokenness, and destruction.
A Warning We Cannot Ignore
The list in Deuteronomy isn’t just a set of ancient cultural rules. These actions represent a rebellion against God's authority and a heart posture that seeks to gratify self rather than honor the Creator. Notice how these sins often exploit others for personal gain—secret sin, abuse of power, selfish gratification. At the core is pride and fleshly desire, and Scripture tells us clearly that this path ends in ruin.
This theme is echoed again in Philippians 3:17-19, where Paul mourns over those who have turned their backs on the cross of Christ, following after the god of their belly—their desires. He warns the faithful to “mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.” Paul is urging believers to be vigilant—not only in guarding their hearts but also in choosing who they walk with.
Practical Application – Guard Your Steps and Your Circle
It’s not enough to avoid sin; we are also called to separate from those committed to walking in rebellion. If we remain closely tied to people who chase selfish desires, we risk being swept into the same bitter end. This doesn’t mean we isolate or refuse to love struggling people—but we must discern who influences our walk.
“When the curse of bitterness comes, you can be trapped in it with them if you do not get away.”
Choose to walk with those who seek the Lord, who submit to His authority, and who aim to honor Him in word and deed. Our Christian walk isn’t accidental—it requires intentional choices and purposeful steps.
Reflection Questions
Are there areas where I am justifying rebellion or selfish desires?
Am I walking closely with people pulling me away from God’s truth, even subtly?
How can I actively pursue a community that encourages godly living?
Let us not just say “Amen” with our mouths but live it with our lives.
Prayer
Father, help me to walk in the truth of Your Word. Keep me from the traps of pride and selfishness. Give me the courage to step away from relationships that pull me into rebellion and help me pursue those who point me toward Christ. May I live a life that honors You and reflects Your perfect order? In Jesus' name, Amen.
